Matt Mitchell

Mitchell is in his third season as a full-time member of the coaching staff and will be in his first season as the co-defensive coordinator in 2026. He is also moving over to coach safeties after coaching linebackers the last two years. 

He had a standout set of linebackers last year as all three starters - Kaiden Roden, Cade Sink and Matt Pascuzzi were all in the top 10 in the ASC in tackles. Roden led the league in tackles and was named the ASC defensive player of the year. Roden and Sink were first-team All-ASC selections and Pascuzzi was second team. 

He put together an elite linebacker unit that was led by All-American Charlie Patterson last season. Patterson was the ASC defensive player of the year and a first-team All-American by D3football.com, the AFCA, Associated Press and Walter Camp. He was also the region's defensive player of the year and a Campbell Trophy and Cliff Harris Award semifinalist. 

Kaiden Roden was also an All-ASC first team selection and an all-region player and Tray Ervin earned second team All-ASC accolades. 

He played five years for the Cowboys and was a five-team all-conference selection and a four-time team captain. He was an All-American in both 2022 and 2023. He was twice a first-team All-ASC selection, named second-team twice and honorable mention one time. He also was named the winner of the Jimmie Keeling Medal and was a five-time academic all-ASC selection and a three-time CoSIDA all-district selection and academic All-American.

He finished his career with 41 games played, 222 tackles, 27 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks. He also broke up nine passes, forced four fumbles, recovered three fumbles and had three interceptions. 

He married Hallie Rose Edmondson, a former standout basketball player at HSU, in June of 2024. He has a bachelor's and master's degree in Business Administration from HSU.
