CLARKSVILLE, Ark. – Jeron Flores tossed seven strong innings and the Hardin-Simmons baseball team hit three home runs in an eight-inning 12-2 run-rule victory over Westminster College in Clarksville, Ark., on Sunday afternoon.
Flores allowed a solo home run in the second and another run scored on an RBI groundout in the third, other than that, he was dominating on the bump. The freshman lefthander from Abilene Cooper worked seven innings, allowed just five hits and struck out eight batters to move to 2-0 in his career.
Ethan Cloudt worked a scoreless eighth in relief.
The Cowboy bats finally came alive in the third game of the weekend in the fifth inning when they exploded for five runs.
Justin Blancaflor had an RBI single,
Jacob Hollingsworth a three-run home and
Mike Lozano added an RBI single a fifth run scored on a double play.
HSU came right back in the sixth inning with six more runs. Blancaflor had a two-run home run and
Gavin Bruning added his second home run of the weekend, a three-run shot.
Bruning also added an RBI single in the eighth inning to put the run-rule in effect.
The Cowboys had 16 hits in the game as Blancaflor, Hollingsworth and Cather Ridings had three hits and
Brock Calvillo and Bruning added two hits. Bruning drove in four runs and Blanacaflor and Hollingsworth added three RBIs each.
Caleb Warren had two hits for Westminster and Jack Page allowed four runs on seven hits in four-plus innings to fall to 1-1 on the season.
The Cowboys are now 3-3 on the year and Westminster fell to 1-3. HSU will play at crosstown rival McMurry on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
