MARSHALL, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' women's soccer team earned a 3-1 win over East Texas Baptist on Saturday evening at Cornish Field, improving to 8-2-2 overall and 3-1 in American Southwest Conference play.
The Cowgirls jumped ahead early, netting three goals in the first half.
Lexi Templin opened the scoring in the fifth minute off an assist from
Riley Surratt, giving HSU a quick 1-0 advantage.
Presleigh Thiessen extended the lead with goals in the 15
th and 33
rd minutes, marking her third and fourth goals of the season and sealing a commanding 3-0 halftime lead.
East Texas Baptist managed a late goal in the 90
th minute from Caroline Smith, but the Cowgirl defense, anchored by goalkeepers
Abigail Medlin,
Samantha Longoria, and
Peyton Scott, held strong throughout. Longoria recorded four saves in 54 minutes of play, while the team combined for five saves overall.
Hardin-Simmons outshot ETBU 9-7 and placed seven shots on goal, while also taking four corner kicks. The Cowgirl defense committed only one foul and held the Tigers scoreless until the final minute.
The Cowgirls win and move to 8-2-2 and 3-1 in conference and will continue on the road next weekend at Howard Payne for an ASC match in Brownwood on Oct. 25 starting at 5 p.m.
