Box Score BELTON, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' women's soccer team battled the Mary-Hardin Baylor Cru in Belton, winning 1-0 on a golden goal in overtime to take first place in the American Southwest Conference west division.
Saturday night's game was the final regular season match before the ASC tournament, and first place in the ASC West was on the line. The Cowgirls entered 4-0-1 with a tie in ASC play while UMHB held a record of 6-0 in the ASC.
The Cowgirls needed the win to overtake the Cru in the west division, and UMHB gave the Cowgirls all they could handle for 92 minutes.
In the 93rd minute, the Cowgirls got a corner on the far side. Senior Madelyn Dowell placed the ball long and into the back post where senior Rachel Bean put a head on it to get by the keeper and score the game-winner, putting the Cowgirls on top 1-0 and in the No. 1 seed for the ASC West.
The Cru put out ten shots and had four on frame while HSU had five shots with three on goal. Mary-Hardin Baylor had eight corners in regulations, but the Cowgirls only needed one to secure the victory.
Haley Foley started in goal for HSU and had two saves in the first half. Kayla Gable finished the game with two saves and got the win.
The Cowgirls improve to 5-0-1 overall and in the ASC. Taking first place in the ASC West, HSU will host the first round of the ASC tournament this Thursday against Ozarks at the HSU Soccer Complex in Abilene at 5 p.m.
